Mission

The mission of South Bay Family Health Care is to provide access to quality health care
for individuals and families, regardless of their ability to pay.

Background

Founded in 1969 as the South Bay Free Clinic, SBFHC now includes two health centers in Inglewood, including one devoted to OB/GYN services, and one each in Redondo Beach and Gardena. SBFHC also operates a school-based clinic at Carson High School and the Healthy Kids Express mobile van.

Patients

In 2012, 20,511 patients (unduplicated) were served at all locations in 72,339 visits. The breakdown of services provided to them was:

  • Adult Medicine 57%
  • Pediatrics 18%
  • Family Planning 10%
  • Prenatal 8%
  • Dental 5%
  • Other 2%

Seventeen percent of patients were seen for treatment of diabetes, and 21 percent were treated for and hypertension.

Race/Ethnicity:
The racial/ethnic breakdown of our patient base was:

Latino/Hispanic 57%
African American 20%
Caucasian 15%
Asian/Hawaiian/Pacific Islander 5%
Other 3%

Thirty-six percent of our patients were non-English speaking.

0–19 28.4%
20–44 36.6%
45–64 31.0%
65+ 4.0%

Seventeen percent were children under 12.

Medical Coverage: Eighty-eight percent of patients earned incomes below the 100% federal poverty level; 99.5 percent were below the 200% FPL. Fifty-six percent of our patients were uninsured and received services under Healthy Way LA and other programs.

  • Pediatric (well-child exams, physicals/checkups, immunizations, acute illness care, health education, nutrition counseling
  • Dental (preventive, cleaning, x-rays, fluoride treatments, fillings, extractions – adults and children 5 and older)
  • Mental health (partnership with Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services in Inglewood)
  • Health education (specialized classes on diet, exercise, disease management and healthy lifestyle choices)
  • Domestic violence prevention
  • HIV/AIDS treatment
  • Case management (on-site services and referrals to community partners)
  • Lab services
  • Pharmacy
