To promote the well-being of the underserved by providing access to high-quality healthcare for all, regardless of ability to pay.
UMMA envisions itself as part of a larger network of institutions addressing the health and well-being of the underserved and indigent, mindful of the cultural, spiritual, social and economic realities that impinge upon them and the traditional barriers to accessing care.
UMMA (University Muslim Medical Association) Community Clinic was started in 1992 by Muslim American students at UCLA and Charles Drew University. We were the first Muslim-built clinic in the United States and the first Muslim American organization designated as an FQHC. In 2011, we expanded our facility, doubling our capacity, and enabling us to serve more patients.
UMMA Community Clinic is the medical home to over 25,000 adults and children living in South Los Angeles. We emphasize the need for regular follow-ups, which include screenings, immunizations, and patient education, as well as lifestyle modification.
In many cases, patients are seen by a regular provider and, typically, provided with medication for any diagnosed conditions at either no cost or low cost, depending on ability to pay. If a patient requires more advanced tests or specialty care, UMMA will provide an in-house referral to our volunteer specialist or a referral to a local county medical facility.
Since it first opened its doors, UMMA has served as a teaching site for medical students and resident physicians from UCLA and other local institutions, as part of their medical training. Our doctors have trained and mentored scores of trainees, who gain exposure to the medical and social issues unique to a multicultural inner-city population.
In 2022, UMMA served 6,868 unique patients. More than 54% of our patients live below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). Our patient base is 72% Hispanic/Latino and 15% African American. Most of our patients are adults (75%). We expanded our services by opening a dental clinic and providing dental care to over 300 unique patients. UMMA also distributed a total of 329,181 pounds of fruits and vegetables to local South LA community members and 20 agencies over the course of the year.
Most of the patients we serve are underinsured or uninsured. Sixty-six percent are covered under Medi-Cal.
Currently UMMA and its staff of family doctors provide the following medical services:
